Histochemistry

Background: tissue structures and substances are colored when a chemical group (e.g. carboxyl, phosphoric or aldehyde) reacts with the stain (see examples below).

Suitable for : diagnosis of pathologic conditions.

Not suitable for : routine tissue staining.

Masson’s trichrome staining of formalin-fixed mouse lung: cytoplasm and muscle fibers are red, collagen and mucin are blue, and nuclei are black.


Staining of small intestine (mouse, formalin-fixed) with mucicarmine solution turns mucin deep rose to red, nuclei black and other tissue elements yellow.
