Our Excellent Y2K Adventure
Near the end of the '90', some of our hiking buddies came up with the idea of celebrating New Year's Eve of 1999 (popularly, if not accurately, the end of the 19th century, and the millennium) in one of our favorite Utah slickrock canyons, Coyote Gulch. Seemed like a terrific idea to us: Coyote Gulch is beautiful, and low enough elevation so it shouldn't be too cold or snowy that time of the year. As time passed, some of the instigators dropped out of the trip for various reasons, such as saving the world from the Y2K computer bug. In the end, there were just four of us: Susie and Roger, Sue and myself. We all met in Salt Lake City and drove down to the Escalante country on December 30th. We hiked down Hurricane wash and set up camp just upstream in Coyote Gulch.

Sunset and slickrock from Coyote camp, December 30th. We arrived just in time just in time to set up camp and start dinner before the early winter sunset.
Boy, was it cold that night. Good thing we didn't need to stay up 'til midnight. I was beginning to wish I had brought a nice down jacket like Susie's, instead of just a down vest.

On the 31st, we hiked down Coyote Gulch past Jacob Hamlin Arch (pictured). Although this was a familiar section of the canyon, an added dimension this time was the ice covering much of Coyote Creek. In places, it was thick enough and extensive enough to "skate" on. In other places, it was just a nuisance, breaking underfoot. Needless to say, a premium was placed on keeping feet dry in the cold water. In warm weather hikes, getting the feet wet in the creek feels good-not this time. Thank heavens for Gore-Tex-lined boots!
Our goal was a panel of pictographs downstream from Coyote Natural Bridge. Somehow we had missed these in our two previous trips through the canyon. This time, Roger spotted them from a distance and we got up close for some pictures.

A nice grinding stone was near the pictographs, as well.
