Toklat & Nuska's Links About Siberian Huskies (and other sled dogs)

Welcome to Toklat and Nuska's Siberian Husky Page
Our family includes two Siberian huskies, Toklat and Nuska- or perhaps we are a part of their family? Toklat is a male with light copper and white coloration, born July 20, 1989. With one blue eye and one brown eye, he can definitely give you the evil eye. He is an alpha dog-wannabe. In reality, he is extremely friendly (cum laude from the Dale Carnegie course on how to win friends and influence people). He rarely barks, but does talk back to us if we aren't quick enough with his dinner!
Matanuska (Nuska for short) is a female, black and white, with touches of red, and a dark face, and was born in 1992. Nuska has always been the mischievous one. She constantly plots ways to torment Toklat. Friendly with us, she is none-the-less wary around strangers, giving her something of a "reputation" around the neighborhood. Huskies are extremely friendly, social dogs. They require lots of exercise and attention. Toklat and Nuska make sure to take us for long walks in the woods daily. (Sometime I'll tell you about the "husky workout" routine.) They are quite clever about manipulating humans. Surprisingly, huskies do just fine in the hot Texas summer: they find a shady spot and lay low during the day, but still like to romp in the mornings and evenings. Give them a crisp winter day,and they really get enthusiastic! Siberians are noted for howling, however ours don't-they just do their ooh-oooh-ohs. In fact we've been interested to note that they don't howl in reponse to the nearby coyotes that frequently serenade us. Information about huskies and other sled dogs
Mushing, Iditarod coverage and other resourcesIditarodThe 31st annual Iditarod race is the quintessential long distance (1100 miles!) sled dog trek. Follow it starting Saturday, March 1, 2003!Unthinkable! This year's Iditarod route has been relocated due to warm temperatures and lack of snow in Southern Alaska. Therefore, the race was started from Fairbanks this year, and rerouted to avoid segments that could have been dangerous for the dogs ("Idita-detour").
