Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) was established in 1979 at the Science Park - Research Division. The primary goal of the SURP is to provide an authentic research experience for outstanding undergraduate students considering careers in biomedical and environmental research. Students participate in hypothesis-driven, project-based investigations for ten weeks during their summer break. This highly competitive program routinely receives over 100 applications for a limited number of slots. It is not uncommon for students to make substantial research contributions and to earn co-authorship on scientific abstracts and manuscripts.
As part of the SURP, students attend a weekly lunch lecture series developed by campus postdoctoral fellows to introduce basic scientific topics such as carcinogenesis, animal models, molecular biology, flow cytometry and emerging analytic techniques. In addition, there are other activities, including social events and tours of the Houston and Bastrop campuses of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. The interns also present a 10-minute talk describing their research results at the SURP Scientific Symposium held on the last day of the program.
